10 Ways To Stay Creative At Home
Mates, it’s been a tough time lately and so many people in our industry are impacted by theatre closures and cancelled auditions. If you find yourself feeling stuck, here are 10 ways that might help to use this time to rest, learn, create and connect online.
1. Sing every day! Events like this remind us more than ever of the healing power of music. It’s good for your soul and our humanity.
2. Listen to cast recordings, watch musical films and (legal) online performances. Many arts organisations are also currently streaming their performances for free. You can watch the @metopera from your couch! Share your favourites in the comments so we can all enjoy.
3. Source new repertoire from all the excellent listening and watching you’ve just done. Make playlists. Explore @scribd and @musicnotes . My digital sheet music library is also a nerd’s paradise, so hit me up if you’re looking for a song or score.
4. Organise your rep book. Replace that grubby photocopy you’ve been using for years. Have your short and long audition cuts clearly marked. Throw out the songs that don’t serve you anymore. Does it spark joy and book jobs? Marie Kondo that s*%t. Make sure you have a digital back-up stored online while you’re at it.
5. Read. Books and plays rather than endless social media. I’m still working my way through the great play list from Larry Moss’s masterclass last year. Larry would call me a lazy bastard. No excuses now! File great scenes and monologues for later. Even better, learn them and film a self-test.
6. Listen to podcasts. Some of my favourite voice/theatre podcasts to get you started include: @thenakedvocalist , @thevisceralvoicepodcast , @abalancingact.biz & @theensemblist .
7. Update your CV and website. It may seem bleak now, but when this is over, you’ll be ready to go again!
8. Rest. Meditate. Breathe. (I use @insighttimer )
9. Move your body. Get outside in the sunshine and walk. Practice yoga at home. Stretch. (I use the @downdogapp )
10. Call your mates and connect with each other. That creative idea you always talk about but haven’t done yet? Get cracking. Keep being excellent mates!
